Volhard Puppy Temperament testing:

This test was developed by the Volhard’s for evaluating puppies in terms of dominance or submission.

Puppies are tested in four (4) areas.

  • Social attraction
  • Reaction to restraint
  • Social dominance
  • Elevation dominance

Adult dog testing:

(Note, some dogs are fully mature adults by 12 months, others are still in the full throes of adolescence at that age & yet others are still puppies at a year old.)

Breed is definitely a fact in the maturing process. As a general rule, small breeds mature earlier than large breeds.

Some European working dogs aren’t considered mature before they’re 3 or 4 yrs. old.

This test is based on the ATTS (American Temperament Testings)

ATTS wisely requires a dog to be at least 18months old before it takes the test.

(The test consists of a stimulated stroll through a park. During the stroll, the dog is tested in 5 different areas.)

  • Behaviour towards strangers
  • Reaction to auditory (hear-related) stimuli.
  • Reaction to a visual stimulus
  • Reaction to tactile (touch- related) stimuli
  • Self-protective/aggressive behaviour.

(The dog can fail any part of the test if its show’s unprovoked aggression, panic without recovery and strong avoidance.)

Paws working dog evaluation:

This is a test to identify dogs that could excel in police K9, Scent detection, Search, protection, agility, Obedience(care) and other similar dog jobs.

The test is designed to assess possessiveness, attention, willingness, and strength.

The are seven individual traits.:

  • Prey Drive
  • Retrieve
  • Persistence
  • Tug
  • Possessiveness
  • Recall
  • Attention

Good Canine Test:

This test is to really evaluate the TOTAL DOG, including some elements of training and socialisation.

(There is no age requirement for taking this test, but the dog must have completed all its vaccinations.)

To pass the test, a dog should have some training, but precision isn’t necessary.

The test includes 10 areas;

  • Accepting a friendly stranger
  • Sitting politely for petting
  • Appearance and grooming
  • Walking nicely on a loose leash
  • Walking through a crowd
  • Sitting, lying down, staying on command
  • Coming when called
  • Accepting the presence of another dog with no signs of avoidance or aggression.
  • Responding properly to distractionsResponding properly to surprised separation.

(The goal of the test is to encourage responsible dog ownership. To pass the test, a dog Must successfully complete all ten test items, providing it can behave in a variety of situations.)
